Discipline and Dismissal
It is perhaps the single most dreaded part of a manager's job.  It is the task that is most often put off, or avoided altogether.  Some may even believe that volunteers can't be fired simply because they are volunteers.  The consequence is that "difficult volunteers" begin to manage us! In the most-dreaded of circumstances, long-standing, deeply committed volunteers decline in capacity to the point that they are unable to meet minimum performance standards.  What to do?

Workshop Description
This workshop is based on the premise that managers of volunteers not only have the right, they have the obligation, to evaluate and correct the work performance of volunteers, and to dismiss volunteers when that is the appropriate action.  Volunteers and the work they do are so important these days that standards of performance need to be in place and enforced.

While this workshop focuses on the most difficult of volunteers whose performance demands formal intervention up to and including dismissal, the key theme is that managers of volunteers have a wide range of corrective actions available to them.  We explore the full range of approaches and how to choose the right method for the problem at hand.

This workshop explores how to establish appropriate expectations from the very start and presents practical, `how-to' details on volunteer discipline and dismissal procedures.

Participants will learn:

  • The ground rules that establish your right to monitor and evaluate volunteer performance
  • The corrective action continuum that reinforces good work and presents a range of optional responses when performance fails to meet expectations
  • The principles and steps in progressive discipline
  • Eleven how-to's of discipline and six principles of dismissal
  • The elements of `rightful dismissal'
  • How to prepare for and manage the dismissal interview
  • Key foundations of policy in this high-stakes area

Who Should Attend?
Whether you are an experienced manager of volunteers or a novice in the field, you will find this workshop packed with practical, ready-to-apply information and strategies.  Gain both the confidence and the skills to do what needs to be done to ensure your organization is on the right track towards mission fulfilment.
