Workshop Descriptions: Risk Management

Risk Proof Your Volunteer Programs

Who Should Attend
Workshop Duration
Managers of Volunteers Two Hours or Half Day (Three Hours) or
Program Staff
Executive Directors Full Day (Six Hours)
Senior Managers
Board Members

Greater risks exist, and the potential for liability grows, as the work of volunteers becomes more responsible. Risk management systems are needed to set boundaries and to define what is and what is not acceptable.

In this workshop we review a simple, comprehensive, risk management system that can be applied to any volunteer program in any organization. We look at liability and how to identify points of greatest exposure. Do you place your volunteers in positions of trust? If you ask your volunteers to do important work, if they are in direct contact with clients or confidential information, or if they have any fiscal responsibility, you really should attend this workshop. Whether you are new to volunteer management or an expert in the field, you will find this workshop revealing, practical, and directly applicable to your program. You will learn how to reduce liabilities through the implementation of a risk management system, establish clear boundaries, and ensure greater safety for volunteers, clients, and staff.

Risk Proof Your Organization

Board Members

The voluntary sector is changing rapidly. Greater risks are created as human problems become more complex, and as the demand for services and accountability increase in the face of diminishing resources. Risk management systems establish boundaries, reduce exposure to liability, and ensure effective, productive and safe agency operations.

Could This Happen In Your Organization?

• board members are being sued because a young client was sexually assaulted by a volunteer
• your organization is expected to serve clients who are significantly more sick, frail, or vulnerable than ever before, but you're not sure you can live with the additional risks that such services will generate
• criminal charges are pending against the bookkeeper for misappropriation of funds
• the confidentiality of sensitive client records has been breached
• volunteers are working one-to-one with clients in isolated settings without a supervisor present, and you aren't certain about what your agency's volunteer screening protocol looks like
• the media is on the line with questions about alleged breach of conflict of interest guidelines by your property committee chairperson

In this workshop we will explore the risk management cycle and learn a simple, comprehensive risk management system that can be applied in any organization. We will explore concepts of negligence and vicarious liability, and work through a straightforward risk identification and planning system that works for any kind or level of service delivery. Take this system back to your agency for immediate application.

Whether you are new to agency administration or an expert in the field, you will find this workshop revealing, practical, and directly applicable in your organization.

Risk Management For Front Line Staff

Front Line Volunteers

Does it seem like your staff are being asked to do more every year? Have they been placed in positions of trust? Are they working with vulnerable clients? Do they have access to confidential information, or have access to money or other valuables as part of their work duties? Are they on the road, working off-site, in remote locations, or in clients’ homes? Are they connecting face to face with the public as your agency’s ambassadors?

Risks related to the work of front line staff have increased in many agencies over the last few years. Public accountability is increasing, and liability exposure grows. The implementation of a risk management system can help your organization to lower its risks and manage its liability. Training front line staff to identify, report, and control risks in their day to day work may one day prevent a peril from materializing into a tragedy.

This workshop is designed specifically for front line staff. We explore a simple, comprehensive risk management system and teach front line staff how to implement it as soon as they return to your agency.
