Yes You Can! Discipline And Dismissal Of Volunteers

In this energetic live-to-tape presentation, Linda asserts that organizations have both the right and the obligation to discipline and even dismiss volunteers when necessary. Highlighted with entertaining real-life anecdotes, this resource lays out the principles of rightful and wrongful dismissal, the principles of progressive discipline, and how to prepare for the dreaded termination interview. This 95-minute audio tape is a quick and easy way for volunteer program managers to gain both the skills and confidence they need to handle difficult volunteer situations with equity and compassion. It is a perfect training tool for staff members who supervise the work of volunteers.

Yes You Can! Review

YES you Can! Discipline & Dismissal of Volunteers (95 minute AudioWorkshop™) by Linda Graff, is, in the opinion of this reviewer, a must for every volunteer manager. This audiotape is an edited version of a workshop presented at the 1996 International Conference on Volunteer Administration. It is filled with solid, practical guidance for dealing with difficult volunteers. Even if you have been at the job for many years and are comfortable with your discipline and dismissal procedures, this tape will lift your spirit and affirm good volunteer management theory. I found myself saying YES! over and over as I listened to the discussion of the role of volunteers in an organization and the need to be professional in all aspects of our work. As Linda explains, the consequence of putting off or avoiding discipline, or believing that volunteers can’t be fired, is that difficult volunteers begin to manage us! The theme of this audiotape is that "volunteers and their work are just too important to be treated with anything less than respect and responsibility." As always, Linda advocates setting appropriate expectations from the very start and being consistent in our obligation to evaluate, discipline and when necessary, dismiss volunteer workers. Linda walks us through the steps and principles of progressive discipline and continues to help us all decrease personal and organizational risks through sound practices and procedures.

Though taped as part of a live workshop, the editing is excellent. At times Linda interrupts the flow of the session to respond to specific participant questions. Background noise and interruptions have been filtered out. If you have never had the opportunity to attend one of Linda’s training sessions this is the next best thing. I think this tape should be mandatory listening for every new (and seasoned) volunteer administrator.

Yes You Can! Reader’s Comments

I would just like to say that I have found the audio tapes invaluable. They are full of good common sense advice and it’s like doing the workshops over and over again, but in your own time and at your own speed. They are great for playing in the car traveling to and from work. Many thanks for them Linda. --Peter Sloan, Coordinator, Bolton Volunteer Bureau, England
